Tidewater Bride by Laura Frantz is a historical fiction novel based in Jamestown, Virginia, in the 1630s. Many of the characters were based on real people from the time. Two characters especially may jog the reader’s memory from history: Xander Renick represented John Rolfe, and his Powhatan princess Mattachanna represented Pocahontas.
Xander is a widower with a young son. He runs a plantation and works alongside his indentured servants in Rose-n-Vale, several miles upriver from James Towne. He also often acts as mediator between the Powhatan tribe and the settlers of Virginia.
Selah Hopewell is the daughter of a merchant, is considered nearly a spinster, and is in no rush to marry. Her days are full working at the store and helping with the homestead, but she is also given the task of overseeing a group of women arriving on ship, hoping to find husbands in the New World.
Xander is not interested in a tobacco bride, and Selah is not interested in marriage, but the two find themselves caught up in the air of romance spreading through town.
Laura’s writing reveals her extensive time dedicated to research. She develops the storyline expertly, and the characters’ personalities feel genuine. She is descriptive and provides amazing detail for the reader.
I look forward to reading more of Laura Frantz’s books. If you enjoy Christian historical fiction, consider Tidewater Bride as your next read.
